Watercraft Exhibit Building

Hundreds of years ago the primary mode of travel was on foot or with assistance of a domestic animal. Native Americans soon discovered that being able to navigate a thousand-plus lakes by canoe greatly expanded opportunities. Using the ingenuity of Anishinaabe design and construction techniques, early Euro-American traders and trappers explored wilderness waters with canoes and paddle strokes.

Opened in 2019, the Watercraft Exhibit features historic canoes, boats, and motors exemplifying the importance of water travel. Each watercraft has a story.

The Gunflint Trail Historical Society is grateful to the USDA Forest Service for assistance, the Minnesota Historical Society, and a wonderful assemblage of Gunflint Trail community residents and friends who contributed financial support, exhibit components, and significant building skills and elbow grease.

One admission fee covers the entire Chik-Wauk campus.
