MUSEUM

We’ve been exploring the Gunflint Trail and North Shore for many decades and decided to volunteer after many years of showing off Chik-Wauk to visiting family and friends. It was time to give back to a wonderful organization!

Bill Boissenin

MUSEUM

Along with my parents and grandparents, I arrived on the trail at 1 year of age.  My father felt that the trail was the place to be and he started two resorts, Trout Lake and Forest Lodge. In memory of my parents and my great experiences, I felt being a volunteer at Chik-Wauk helped prolong the memories.

MUSEUM

Each time I’m at the museum I learn things I wasn’t aware of as I was growing up on Saganaga. I enjoy sharing my passion for the area with our visitors.

Joyce Leddy

MUSEUM

I have spent time on the Gunflint Trail most years since 1945.  Consequently, I have experienced the Trail when it was only a rough gravel road, as well as when it was challenged by a severe blowdown and fires.  Through all its changes, my family and I continue to be blessed by the Gunflint Trail’s people, glacial lakes, Boreal forests, and access to a protected wilderness.  To serve as a volunteer for Chik-Wauk gives me the privilege and opportunity to give something back – to inspire others to appreciate this area’s beauty, opportunity for adventure, and unique history.

NATURE CENTER

I volunteer to gain knowledge of the history of the Gunflint Trail and Wilderness area. I enjoy sharing the history, nature, animals and the stories of the folks who have or are living on the Gunflint Trail. I believe in sharing this glimpse of long ago, and the present and future of living in this unique area. I volunteer to help ensure that it continues to be treated with respect and gratitude.

MUSEUM

Actually, the truth is that volunteering at Chik Wauk is one of the highlights of my summer every year! Whether it’s interacting with museum guests to share the beauty and interest of the Gunflint Trail and its history, or sharing about the flora and fauna here, it energizes me to volunteer here. I think I get a lot more out of volunteering than I give.

NATURE CENTER

When I come to work in the Nature Center, I always learn something new about the natural world. Which is great fun. But mostly I enjoy visiting with folks who are new to the North Shore and Gunflint Trail and hearing their reactions to our beautiful Boreal Forest and amazing Lakes.

NATURE CENTER

I grew up in the lakes and woods of Finland.  Very much like the Gunflint.

I developed my love and study of nature there.  Chick-Wauk offers young
people activities to learn, enjoy and cherish the wonders around us.
Participating with them as they discover these wonders is a pleasurable and
rewarding experience.
