Hiking Trails
The Chik-Wauk Campus boasts picnic areas, overlooks, and several interpretive hiking trails on 50 acres grounds surrounding several Saganaga Lake bays. The trails provide insight into the history and ecology of the Gunflint Trail, including a first-hand glimpse of wildfire regeneration from the Ham Lake Wildfire, which burned through a portion of Chik-Wauk’s property in May 2007.
Visitors especially enjoy the 2-mile round trip hike to Blueberry Hill, which affords spectacular views of Saganaga and Seagull Lakes, as well as prime blueberry picking in July and August.
The Chik-Wauk grounds are always open to visitors.
During operating season, the driveway’s front gate opens at 9:30 a.m. and closes at 5:00 p.m. each day. If you’d like to hike after hours, please park at the end of the driveway off to the side of the main gate.
There is no overnight parking.
Public boat accesses for Saganaga Lake are located at the end of Moose Pond Drive (Cook County Road 81) and along Sag Lake Trail (Cook County Road 11). Nearest swimming beach at Seagull Public Access. There is no swimming or public lake access on campus.
Fishing is allowed off of the USFS dock.
Dogs are welcome on Chik-Wauk’s hiking trails. Please have your pet leashed at all times (including in the parking area) and pick up after them.
