The class will begin with a 30-40 minute presentation at Chik Wauk Nature Center (9:00 a.m.), then proceed south in your vehicle to a few outcrops of the Archean Saganaga tonalite (2.6 billion years old) along the Gunflint Trail.
The rest of the day will involve a hike in the morning, lunch then another hike in the afternoon.
Hike 1: Up the Kekekabic Trail (3 miles round trip) see the Archean greenstones (2.6 billion years old), the Gunflint Fm. (banded iron formation; ~1.9 billion years old), the Duluth Gabbro (1.1 billion years old) and a variety of other deformation complexities.
Break for lunch.
Hike 2: Out the Magnetic rock trail (~3 miles one-way) to see stromatolites in the Gunflint Fm., Magnetic Rock, and evidence of the Sudbury impact event at the top of the Gunflint Fm.

No age limit – you will be walking on uneven ground.
Please bring the following items with you
A bag lunch
Appropriate outdoor clothing, footwear, and headwear
Water bottle
Anything you need to be comfortable outdoors: sunscreen, bug nets, rain jacket, etc.
Lots of layers, including a raincoat and footwear
Option: Feel free to bring your favorite tools and materials you might feel appropriate for this course.
Take your time driving up the Scenic Gunflint Trail.
