James Ellis – Artist-in-Residence Program, Meet & Greet
James Ellis is a realist oil painter whose work captures the wild and ever-changing beauty of Northern Minnesota, a region defined by the vast expanse of Lake Superior and the dense, boreal forests that hug its rugged shoreline. His paintings explore the essence of this unique landscape, meticulously rendering the textures of papery birch bark, the dynamic play of light on the often turbulent waters of Lake Superior, and the grandeur of towering, wave-worn sea stacks, dramatic arches, and rugged cliffs, revealing the dynamic geological history of the North Shore.
A disability unexpectedly opened the door to Ellis’s artistic expression, revealing his passion for painting. Years of exploring the North Shore have given him an intimate knowledge that translates into emotionally resonant works of art. Through careful observation and a patient, detailed approach, he conveys the atmosphere and distinct character of each location. Through his art, Ellis invites viewers to experience the untamed beauty and captivating nature of the North Shore as he does, fostering a deeper appreciation for this remarkable region. His paintings are more than just representations of a place; they are an invitation to connect with its very soul.
“Drawing upon the tradition of 18th and 19th-century Realism and Naturalism, my paintings explore the dramatic landscapes of the North Shore and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Rooted in a foundation of careful observation and accurate representation, my technique combines expressive brushwork and palette knife to create unique textures that capture the raw, untamed beauty of Lake Superior’s rugged coastline. In this process of creation, I seek to preserve the irreplaceable nature of vanishing places. Through this blend of observational accuracy and expressive interpretation, I aim to evoke a sense of awe and a deeper understanding of the natural world, inspiring viewers to cherish and protect this fragile natural scenery.”
During his residency, James will be available to meet the public and share some of his past and current works in progress at a special event on Saturday, September 13, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Schaap Community Center, GTVFD Hall 1.
Attendance is free and open to all.
