SUMMARY:Lauren Burton - Artist-in-Residence Program\, Meet & Greet
DESCRIPTION:Lauren Burton is a painter\, special education teacher\, and musician based in Knife River\, Minnesota. Largely self-taught\, she paints daily\, working in acrylic and watercolor to capture the vibrant light\, color\, and dynamic forms of Lake Superior’s North Shore. Influenced by her background in music and education\, Lauren’s alla prima realism blends expressive brushwork with rich\, emotive color. Her subjects range from landscapes and architecture to pets and figures in motion\, often painted en plein air or from her photographs. \nShe and her husband own Burton Forge and Gallery\, where her artwork is featured alongside his handcrafted metalwork. \n \nDuring her residency\, Lauren will be available to meet the public and share some of her past and current works in progress at a special event on Saturday\, August 2\, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Seagull Lake Community Center\, GTVFD Hall 3. \nAttendance is free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Dr. Seth Moore - Indigenous Co-Stewardship of Moose
DESCRIPTION:Seth Moore\, PhD.\, has worked for the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa since 2005. He presently manages the Grand Portage Department of Biology and Environment. \nDr. Moore has worked on Great Lakes fisheries\, wildlife\, and environmental issues for over 29 years. He earned his Ph.D. in Water Resources Science from the University of Minnesota (2008)\, a master’s degree in Environmental Biology also from the University of Minnesota (1998)\, and a bachelor’s dual degree in Biology and Environmental Studies from Northland College in Ashland\, WI (1994). \nAs Director of Biology and Environment\, he works under limited supervision and has latitude to determine natural resource priorities and focus on projects designed to accomplish natural resources and environmental goals of the Grand Portage Band of Chippewa. Dr. Moore has been recognized as the 2018 Conservation Award winner by the North American Fur Association\, the 2013 Tribal Biologist of the Year award from the Native American Fish and Wildlife Society\, and was co-recipient of Time magazine’s 2006 Person of the Year. He is appointed as a citizen member for a four-year term that ends December 31\, 2025. \nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public.\nDonations are always appreciated. SUMMARY:Dark Sky Caravan 2025
DESCRIPTION:We are on a journey to celebrate and preserve Northeast Minnesota’s dark sky window to the universe. The Dark Sky Caravan will begin on August 11 and will end on August 16 in the footprint of the darkest night sky in the US east of the Mississippi. Each day brings the caravan to a new destination where there will be free programming for all. \nWear long pants/sleeves. It may be summer\, but the temperature can cool down in the evenings\, and you’re not moving around very much while observing. Wear bug spray. It’s a good idea to protect yourself from mosquitoes\, and you’ll enjoy the time more if you’re not having to swat away bugs. But please do not spray bug spray near the telescopes. Apply it beforehand or briefly walk away from the telescopes to spray. \n\nShows in the portable planetarium\nActivities\nTelescope viewing (weather permitting) once it gets dark\nIf it’s cloudy\, there will be activities and more planetarium shows\n\nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public. Donations are always appreciated. \nTake your time driving up the Scenic Gunflint Trail. \nHeld at the A. Paul & Carol Schaap Community Center (mid-trail). \n

DESCRIPTION:The Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium is gearing up to hit the road again for the 8th annual Dark Sky Caravan\, August 11th – 16th! \nMinnesota is home to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW)\, the second-largest International Dark Sky Sanctuary in the world. To celebrate our dark skies\, Planetarium staff will be traveling along the North Shore\, stopping at different locations each night for a star party. You can enjoy fun activities and presentations\, or planetarium shows. Once it gets dark\, you can gaze through telescopes and get a live sky tour of the stars and constellations visible. We will also be on the lookout for meteors from the Perseid meteor shower\, which peaks on August 12th-13th. If it’s cloudy\, don’t worry! SUMMARY:Mark Ellis - Loon Photography and Stories
DESCRIPTION:Mark Ellis is a retired research chemical engineer from 3M Company and has nurtured a lifelong creative outlet through nature photography. Beginning at age 12\, and armed with a manual 35 mm camera\, Mark studied the fundamentals of the craft and began photographing the natural world at his family’s northern Minnesota lakeside cabin. Later\, with the arrival of digital photography\, Mark’s ability to capture wildlife and the natural world took on a new dimension. Experiments with time-lapse photography resulted in visual essays depicting swirling stars and auroras moving across the night sky. \nWith a theme of nature conservation and education\, Mark donates to various causes\, including an annual loon calendar at the National Loon Center in Crosslake\, Minnesota. His time-lapse work has been featured by the BBC’s Natural History Unit\, Nat Geo WILD\, science blogs\, and Minnesota Public Television (Almanac). His video clips also appear in “Medicine of the Wolf\,” an award-winning 2015 documentary about wolves\, available on outlets such as Amazon Prime and Hulu. \nMark will summarize his photography background and overview his loon photography technique and loon interaction etiquette. Through photos and accompanying stories\, Mark will illuminate loon life during the breeding season from migratory spring return after ice-out through to fall migratory departure. The dedication of loon parents will be illustrated during nesting through to care\, training\, and protection of loon chicks and maturing juveniles. Primary natural and human conflict hardships in the lives of loons will be illustrated to emphasize the need for loon conservation efforts and expand appreciation for these magnificent birds. \n \nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public. The presentation will be held at the Seagull Lake Community Center. \nUnforgettable characters like Benny Ambrose\, the last man to live in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness\, will be featured\, along with the hardy pioneers who carved out lives on this wild and beautiful land. Audience stories are encouraged—so bring family tales to help keep these histories alive. \nMark is a master boat builder\, one of the founders of the North House Folk School\, and a speaker who makes the past leap off the page and into the imagination. \nHe’s going to dust off his projector and slides to entertain attendees with some captivating images and stories from the Trail.
