SUMMARY:Dark Sky Caravan 2026 - August 14 & 15 on the Gunflint Trail
DESCRIPTION:We are on a journey to celebrate and preserve Northeast Minnesota’s dark sky window to the universe. The Dark Sky Caravan  Each day brings the caravan to a new destination where there will be free programming for all. \nThe Star Party on the Chik-Wauk Campus will begin at 6:30 with a campfire\, S’mores\, and activities. \nBackup plans with activities for dark sky tours will be in place for inclement weather. \nWear long pants/sleeves. It may be summer\, but the temperature can cool down in the evenings\, and you’re not moving around very much while observing. Wear bug spray. It’s a good idea to protect yourself from mosquitoes\, and you’ll enjoy the time more if you’re not having to swat away bugs. But please do not spray bug spray near the telescopes. Apply it beforehand or briefly walk away from the telescopes to spray. \nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public. Donations are always appreciated. \nTake your time driving up the Scenic Gunflint Trail. \n

SUMMARY:Kyle Johnson - Minnesota Moths
DESCRIPTION:Kyle Johnson has been studying moths for the past 36 years – since age five – from all over Minnesota and Wisconsin to the wilds of Alaska. He is particularly interested in biodiversity inventories\, fauna of different habitats\, and conservation/management concerns. SUMMARY:Sammi Shimota - Keep Calm and Mooz On: The Obsticles Moose Must Overcome to Survive in Minnesota (And How We Can Help!)
DESCRIPTION:Sammi Shimota is a passionate early-career wildlife biologist in northern Minnesota and has spent the last 4+ years studying the wolves\, moose\, and deer populations within the 1854 Ceded Territory. \nA once happy and healthy population\, the mooz (moose) of northern Minnesota took a major blow when over half of the population perished between 2006 and 2013. A combination of factors were found to be the cause of this decline- including parasites\, climate change\, and predation. The moose population has remained steady since 2014 but continues to face degraded habitat\, brainworm\, climate change\, and the persistent pressure of predation. Will the moose population ever grow to what it once was? What work is currently being done by researchers to aid the moose\, and what can you do to help them too? \nThis presentation will be held at the Chik-Wauk Nature Center. \nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public.\nDonations are always appreciated. Take your time driving up the Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway! \nPresentations are sponsored by Visit Cook County and the GTHS Gift Club! \n

SUMMARY:Al Trippel - The Geology of Cook County Minnesota: Oceans\, Volcanoes\, and Glaciers\, Oh My!
DESCRIPTION:Al Trippel lives in Grand Marais and Minneapolis-St. Paul\, Minnesota.  He grew up around rocks in the Midwest and the Western US.  From a childhood hobby to a high school job\, to a career in mining\, and now a passion during retirement (actually it’s “refirement”)\, rocks continue to awe and inspire.  Much of his lapidary and jewelry-making utilizes rocks and minerals found along the way. \nThe Geology of Cook County\, Minnesota – Oceans\, Volcanoes\, and Glaciers\, Oh My!\nCook County is home to a variety of rock types\, some common and some extremely rare on Earth. We will look at where we sit in the regional big picture of the so-called Canadian Shield stable craton. The county straddles two rock terrains: older deep ocean greenstones and granites\, and younger volcanic basalt lavas and intrusions of gabbro. Much more recently\, 1-2 mile thick continental ice sheets scraped and carved the landscape into what we now see as the Sawtooth Mountains and countless inland lakes and hills. A thin veneer of glacial gravel and sand covers much of the land. \nHighly unusual rocks and features include:\n• Gunflint banded iron formation (BIF) early life forms\n• Sudbury asteroid impact debris layer\n• Mid-Continental Rift that failed\n• Hydrothermal (hot springs) Lake Superior Agates and Thompsonite\n• Glaciers of immense power scraped\, sculpted\, and bulldozed the landscape topography\n• Eagle Mountain\, other high knobs\, and numerous water falls are the tallest in Minnesota\n• Lake Superior is the largest lake on Earth\, and its deepest point is 1000 ft below sea level \nThis presentation will be held at the Chik-Wauk Nature Center. \nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public.\nDonations are always appreciated. Take your time driving up the Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway! \nPresentations are sponsored by Visit Cook County and the GTHS Gift Club! \n      \n \n
