SUMMARY:Margie Menzies - Hawks of the North Woods Counting for Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Margie Menzies\, is one part educator\, one part naturalist\, and one part bird nerd! Who says slow and steady wins the race? After years in the formal classroom\, this educator has abandoned the indoors for the great outdoor classroom. Margie joined the Hawk Ridge staff as a Naturalist in 2011 and currently is the Education Program Director for Hawk Ridge. Providing educational programming for the general public furnishes many colorful and meaningful experiences every day on the job. She loves birds\, learning\, and sharing the natural world with people of all ages. Banding songbirds is a passion for Margie\, she bands at Hawk Ridge during migration and with three MAPS stations studying summer breeding birds at Hawk Ridge\, Wolf Ridge\, and Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center. She has a BA in Biology from Bethel University and a MA in Education from the University of St. Thomas. She is also an adjunct member of the University of Minnesota\, Duluth Education Department working primarily with student teacher supervision. \nThe North Woods is home to an amazing number of raptors and each species with its own unique story. Each fall and spring\, these birds migrate via the Central corridor\, one of the premier flyways of North America. Believe it or not\, fall migration is already underway for lots of birds! An average of 90\,000 raptors and hundreds of thousands of other migratory birds have counted annually during the fall and spring counts conducted by Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory. A single day can easily yield thousands to tens of thousands in single species counts. Why do we see such huge numbers? What are we learning from these birds who fly by twice annually? Let’s explore the science of migration\, differences between fall and spring migrations\, what species are observed and when is the best time to see them\, trends observed in 50 years of data\, as well as research and education efforts underway at Hawk Ridge. \nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public. Donations are always appreciated. \nNOTE: Date and Time! \nTake your time driving up the Gunflint Trail\, and enjoy the scenery! \n      \n

SUMMARY:August GTHS - Membership Meeting\, Hear the legend of Aspen Annie
DESCRIPTION:Held at the Seagull Community Center \nThe meeting begins promptly at 1:30 p.m. with a brief overview of GTHS business. Following the business meeting\, Steve Blumke will have a presentation on Aspen Annie. \nThe Legend of Aspen Annie \n \nFifty-five years ago\, a young dad was l looking for a unique fishing experience for himself and his eight-year-old son. That was the year I met Aspen Annie\, and to say that this trip and the people we met were unique\, is an understatement of epic proportions. \n\nAspen Annie was one of the most colorful characters I have ever had the privilege of meeting. She was the owner and proprietor of Aspen Lake Lodge\, a log saloon where she also rented small spartan cabins on Aspen Lake. Aspen Annie was a cross between Kitty from Gunsmoke and Mae West. Fiercely independent\, bawdy\, strong minded and strong willed\, and always in charge. She’d serve you\, regardless of age\, if she wanted\, and wouldn’t if she took a dislike to you. This ultimately led to her undoing. \nIf you found yourself fishing after dark on Aspen Lake\, it was very easy to find your way back home because of her brightly lit Fitger’s sign\, and the deafening ruckus that echoed down the lake from Anne’s lodge on a nightly basis. \nCome and enjoy stories\, mostly true\, some apocryphal\, all memorable\, about this colorful and remarkable lady\, Aspen Anne. \nTreats and conversation follow (thank you to the friends that provide the home-baked goodies each month). If you would like to bring some baked goodies or treats for the monthly meetings please contact Bonnie Schudy at 218-388-9915. \nThe Gunflint Trail Historical Society has four membership meetings available to all GTHS members. Membership meetings are held on the second Monday of June\, July\, August\, and September. \nThe meeting can be viewed by Zoom or in person at the community center; a Zoom link will be sent via email the day before the meeting. \n
