SUMMARY:Lee Frelich - 400 years of fire and wind in the BWCAW
DESCRIPTION:Lee E. Frelich is the Director of the University of Minnesota Center for Forest Ecology.\n\nHe received a Ph.D. in Forest Ecology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1986. Frelich has authored 234 publications with 360 coauthors from 26 countries\, including major works for Cambridge University Press and Oxford University Press. He is listed among the top 1% of all scientists in the world in the Ecology and Environment category by the Web of Science. His research has been featured in the news media 600 times\, including such venues as The New York Times\, Newsweek\, and Washington Post.\n\nCurrent research interests include large-scale fire and wind\, earthworm invasion\, and climate change in temperate and boreal forests.\n\n\n\n\nThis presentation will include:\nMapping and dating fires show that large\, high-intensity crown fires that regenerate jack pine\, black spruce\, birch\, and aspen forests every 50-100 years have been common in the BWCAW over the last 4 centuries. Parts of the landscape have had smaller\, lower-intensity surface fires every few decades that regenerate white and red pine forests. Variations in fire frequencies due to changing climate\, activities of indigenous people and European settlers\, and in recent decades\, large-scale windstorms\, have had significant impacts on the composition of forests that we see on the landscape today.\n\n\nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public. Donations are always appreciated.\nTake your time driving up the Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway.\n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Sam Guida - Galls\, Burls and Brooms\, Oh My!
DESCRIPTION:Sam Guida (he/him) is currently working as the Facilities Director at Camp Olson YMCA in Longville\, Minnesota. One day\, when wandering down the driveway\, he noticed a funny bump on a willow tree. After some investigation\, it turned out to be a gall caused by a tiny critter with a huge name: a willow beaked gall midge\, and Sam has been finding lumps on leaves\, funny-shaped flowers\, and spots on twigs ever since. \nHe has also partnered with several organizations to host gall workshops\, including the Minnesota DNR\, the Sax-Zim Bog\, WTIP\, and Wolf Ridge ELC. Sam also enjoys eating things he finds outside\, cross-country skiing\, and power naps on the couch with Rowan the Cat. Galls\, burls\, and brooms! Oh my! \nThis presentation will focus on exploring the lilliputian world of galls\, burls\, witches’ brooms\, and non-metazoan plant diseases\, as well as the plants they grow on. Galls (no relation to sea gulls) are little hidden insect homes inside plants. You’ve seen some before\, such as the ping-pong-ball-sized lumps on goldenrod. \nDuring the presentation and the following outing\, we’ll discover an awe-inspiring world that you’ve overlooked your entire life! \nWe will start with a PowerPoint with some general information before heading out for a hike\, training our eyes to notice lumpy leaves and other plant deformities\, perfecting our identification skills as we go! We will find many new-to-you species and are guaranteed to come across some species unknown to science! We’ll also stop to appreciate all the other cool stuff we find along the way! By the end of the presentation\, you’ll never be able to walk in the woods without seeing a gall\, burl\, broom\, or other non-metazoan (not animal-made) plant disease ever again! \nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public. Donations are always appreciated. Take your time driving up the Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway!

SUMMARY:Open House Celebration - 20th Anniversary of Gunflint Trail Historical Society/ 15th Birthday Chik-Wauk Museum & Nature Center
DESCRIPTION:This postcard came from Nancy Dalbec. On the back it says: “Art & Lydia Nunstedt – \, owners on Saganaga Lake. \nCelebrate 20 Years of the Gunflint Trail Historical Society and 15 Years of Chik-Wauk! \nSaturday\, July 5\, will mark two exciting milestones: the 20th Anniversary of the Gunflint Trail Historical Society (GTHS) and the 15th birthday of the Chik-Wauk Museum & Nature Center! \n🎂 Festivities will include cake and beverages.\n🎤 At 1:00 PM\, longtime resident Sue Kerfoot will share the story of how the GTHS and the Chik-Wauk Museum came to be.\n🥾 Afterwards\, take a guided hike with Emma Adams and learn more about the rich history of the Chik-Wauk property. \nInside the Museum\, don’t miss this year’s special temporary exhibit\, celebrating the incredible spirit and dedication of the volunteers and community members who made Chik-Wauk Museum & Nature Center a reality in 2010. \nFor the cooks and bakers out there\, creating something meaningful often starts with a recipe. But what if there isn’t one? That was the challenge the early GTHS founders faced. There were no instructions—just a vision to preserve the stories of the Gunflint Trail and bring them to life at Chik-Wauk. \nTheir ingredients? Passion\, perseverance\, community spirit\, and a deep love for the Northwoods.\nThis exhibit shares the story of how those ingredients came together to create something truly timeless. \nCome celebrate —honor the past\, enjoy the present\, and help shape the future of this special place.

SUMMARY:Adam Lindquist - Teddy Roosevelt - The Wilderness Warrior
DESCRIPTION:    \nFor over 15 years\, Adam Lindquist has provided audiences across America with interesting stories of Theodore Roosevelt in the first person. His research into this amazing man takes hundreds of hours per year as he continues to learn and grow his skills as a living history performer. These talents have paid off with him being crowned three-time national champion and living history performer. \nWe can thank Theodore Roosevelt for preserving over 230\,000\,000 acres of land during his almost two-term presidency. His leadership changed America for the better and challenged its people to think of their country as a natural landscape that should be preserved for future generations. The Wilderness Warrior is based on the book of the same title\, telling the stories of why Roosevelt decided to preserve this land\, our land\, for all of us to enjoy. He is the least likely of people to ever become such a leader\, challenged at a young age simply survive a crippling disease. Come experience for yourself the energy\, enthusiasm\, and wonder that is Theodore Roosevelt. \nThe presentation will be held at the Seagull Community Center\, 7 Seagull Lake Access Road\, Grand Marais\, MN 55604\nhttps://teddyrooseveltlive.com/ \nAll presentations are family-friendly and free of charge.\nDonations are always appreciated. DESCRIPTION:The Gunflint Trail Historical Society/Artist-in-Residency Program committee is excited to announce that Linda Powers and her husband\, Larry. They will visit the Gunflint Trail May 18 – 23. \nLinda studied Studio Art and Art History at the University of Minnesota\, Morris\, where she had the opportunity to work with several talented fine art professors. These experiences helped her build a strong foundation for observing the world\, appreciating light and shadows\, and developing the skills needed to express her artistic vision. \nLinda is a highly accomplished artist\, with her botanical artworks accepted into regional\, national\, and international exhibits. Her works are held in prestigious collections\, including the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden Florilegium and The Huntington Library\, Art Collections\, & Botanical Gardens\, as well as several private collections. \nYou can view her work on her website\, Linda Powers \nLarry Dailey studied photography and philosophy during his college years\, but his professional career took a different direction—into Information Technology\, where he spent the majority of his working life in the airline industry with Northwest and Delta Air Lines. During those years\, photography took a back seat. \nIn the past two decades\, however\, especially during the later part of his career and into retirement\, Larry and his wife Linda have embraced a shared passion for travel and photography. Thanks in part to airline travel benefits\, they’ve journeyed extensively\, developing a deep appreciation for the natural world. Together\, they enjoy hiking\, birdwatching\, and gathering subject matter for Linda’s botanical art\, which often begins with field sketches\, color studies\, and photographic reference. \nTheir travels have taken them to every continent except Antarctica\, with a focus on areas of stunning natural beauty: rainforests\, cloud forests\, mountains\, deserts\, and prairies. Whether through the camera lens or paintbrush\, they’ve worked to document and celebrate the diverse landscapes\, plants\, and wildlife encountered along the way. \nAmong their favorite destinations is the Gunflint Trail and the North Shore of Lake Superior—a region they’ve visited many times and hold dear. Larry is especially excited to spend more time exploring the far end of the Gunflint Trail\, continuing to observe\, document\, and share the rich flora and fauna that make the area so unique. \nDuring their stay\, Linda will be exploring the Gunflint Trail in search of small treasures to add to her collection. If you see them driving around\, taking photographs\, or sketching\, please say hello! \nLinda and her husband\, Larry\, will have an open studio session on May 22 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm\, located at 166 Round Lake Road\, Grand Marais\, MN. The Artist Residence is located 48 miles up the Gunflint Trail\, off County Road 47. SUMMARY:Kim Gordon - Batik Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:The Gunflint Trail Historical Society (GTHS)\, is excited to welcome two Artist-in-Residents to the Gunflint Trail. Kim Gordon and Don Luce’. \nWith artistic eagerness\, they will explore the Gunflint Trail looking for that special setting\, composition\, and golden hour light\, which gives them inspiration for their next piece of creativity. \nKim Gordon\, who lives in Minneapolis Minnesota\, has a connection to the GTHS through her long friendship and professional relationship with Bill and Sue Douglas. She has volunteered for GTHS by serving on the Artist in Residency Task Force where she was instrumental with advice and knowledge from her many experiences with Artist residencies and exhibits. \nInspired by landscape\, light\, and color\, Kim is a Painter and Batik Artist. Batik is the ancient technique of wax resists and layers of pigmentation. \nBatik is one of the oldest ways to create patterned fabric besides weaving together threads of different colors. It uses a fluid pigment or dye and a “resist” – hot wax – to slowly build designs. The pigment is applied in layers\, from lightest to darkest\, and the hot wax is selectively applied to areas where the artist wishes to retain that color or value. The wax “resists” subsequent layers of pigment. By layering pigment and wax\, one gradually can increase color and value range. Each layer of wax protects what is underneath it. This way a complex image can be created. The brush strokes visible in these batiks are not strokes of pigment but are strokes made with melted wax protecting a pigment layer. \nKim Gordon will be available to talk about Batik\, at Chik-Wauk on September 15\, from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. \n \n  \n  \n
