SUMMARY:Induction of the State Record Walleye caught by LeRoy Chiovitte
DESCRIPTION:photo courtesy of Duluth News Tribune\n \nMinnesota’s state-record walleye is home! LeRoy Chiovitte’s state record walleye was donated by his family to the Gunflint Trail Historical Society. \nChiovitte’s\, big walleye was caught on the Seagull River where it enters Saganaga Lake. The walleye was caught on May 13\, 1979\, on the Seagull River\, at the end of the Gunflint Trail. The walleye was 35 ¾” long\, 21 ¼” girth\, and weighed 17 lb. 8 oz. \nOn May 29\, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.\, there will be a special induction of this walleye at the Chik-Wauk Watercraft Building. Join in the celebration with a silent auction; featuring a chance to own a Double Walleye Wire Sculpture that was created by Bud Bullivant\, Epicurean Fish Fillet Board\, Charcuterie Boards created by Bruce Kerfoot\, and handmade signs by Chad Keiper. \nThe closest anyone has come to catching (and keeping) a walleye as big was on July 4\, 1989\, when then-University of Minnesota President Bob Bruininks caught one that weighed 17 pounds\, 6 ounces on Loon Lake along the Gunflint Trail. It was weighed more than two hours after it was caught and it could have possibly bested Chiovitte’s record had it been weighed sooner. But we’ll never know. \nFish pictures and big fish stories abound. \n

SUMMARY:Jim Block - The meteorology of the 1999 BWCAW Windstorm & Derecho
DESCRIPTION:One of the most cataclysmic natural events of the last 100 years in the BWCAW occurred on July 4\, 1999 when a straight-line windstorm caused incredible damage across this area. This storm\, known as a derecho\, was one of the most intense and long-lived derecho’s on record. This presentation will explore the meteorology of derecho’s\, examine how these storms develop\, and what the impacts are. We will look specifically at the experience of the Gunflint Trail and examine long-term impacts such as the Ham Lake fire. \nJim Block\, is a Certified Consulting Meteorologist\, one of only 285 active in the world\, with over 40 years of experience in commercial meteorology\, and he was elected as a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society in 2010. He is the Chief Meteorological Officer at DTN\, a Minneapolis based company whose weather division is the largest commercial weather business in the world. Since 2017\, he has worked with several UN agencies and the Green Climate Fund to develop climate smart programs that bring enhanced weather information to farms in developing countries to increase food production and mitigate climate change. \nphoto courtesy of the Tiffany’s\n \nAll presentations will be held in Chik-Wauk Nature Center. Masks are mandatory to wear inside all buildings at Chik-Wauk. \nThe presentation is free and open to the public\, donations are always appreciated. \n

SUMMARY:Conserving the North Woods in the Era of Climate Change: Trends\, Impacts\, & Management Actions with Keith Wendt
DESCRIPTION:Keith Wendt will provide an overview of how climate change interacts with and amplifies current threat to conserving our lands and waters in the North Woods. Climate change directly impacts our region’s forest types\, waters\, and wildlife. Climate change also drives the spread of invasive species\, amplifies outbreaks of pest populations\, extends the wildfire season\, and increase the probability of extreme weather events. Keith will share lessons learned in applying new tools and on-the-ground management actions designed to help the ecosystems of the North Woods adapt to an uncertain and changing climate future. \nKeith has worked 34 years for the MN Department of Natural Resources before retiring in 2015. He has served as Plant Ecologist\, Research Supervisor\, and most recently as Science Policy Manager. Keith has a long history\, dating back to 1989\, working in partnership efforts to assess climate change risks in Minnesota and develop on-the-ground management actions to better protect the health and resiliency of the state’s natural landscapes. In 2006\, Keith and his wife became grateful stewards of a little piece of land with cabin on the Gunflint Trail. \nThe presentation is free and family friendly – donations are always appreciated. \nMasks are mandatory in all buildings at Chik-Wauk. \n

SUMMARY:The Linklaters: People of the Canoe Country with Tim Cochrane
DESCRIPTION:John and Tchi-Ki-Wis Linklater — a Metis and Anishinaabe couple— lived most of their adult lives on Basswood Lake. Tchi-Ki-Wis was a Lac La Croix Band member and related to many Border Lakes Anishinaabe people might know such as the Powells and Caribou family at Grand Portage and Lac La Croix. John was Metis\, of Anishinaabe\, Cree\, Orkney\, and Welsh descent. His family have multi-generational roots working for and trading with the Hudson’s Bay Company in Ontario\, Manitoba and further North. \nThe presentation is a biographical description of their lives and the impacts of their lives on others such as Sigurd Olson\, university biologists\, and the creation of Isle Royale National Park. Tchi-Ki-Wis was also an expert artisan of a now largely lost Anishinaabeg craft\, the making and weaving of mats from the inner bark of cedar into geometric designs. \nTim Cochrane served as the superintendent of Grand Portage National Monument for twenty years. His books include Minong-The Good Place: Ojibwe and Isle Royale\, Gichi Bitobig\, Grand Marais: Early Accounts of the Anishinaabeg\, and A Good Boat Speaks for Itself: Isle Royale Fishermen and Their Boats. He lives outside of Grand Marais. Besides researching and writing he enjoys ‘foraging’ for maple sap for syrup\, wild rice\, and growing apples for apple cider. \nAll presentations are family friendly and free to the public – donations are always appreciated.

SUMMARY:Staci Drouillard - "Walking the Old Road"
DESCRIPTION:Whether your ancestors are Scandinavian or Ojibwe\, life along the North Shore was never easy. In the late 1930’s when the local economy shifted from extractive industry to tourism\, the Anishinaabe people living at Grand Marais and on the Gunflint Trail adapted to the times\, relying on trapping\, fishing\, guiding\, picking berries and making souvenirs to sell to the growing number of North Shore visitors. Based on research and elder interviews in Walking the Old Road: A People’s History of Chippewa City and the Grand Marais Anishinaabe\, local historian and author Staci Drouillard\, will share stories\, photos and analysis of the groundbreaking ways Anishinaabe people paved the way for our modern\, local economy. \nStaci Lola Drouillard (pronounced: Drew-lard) lives and works in her hometown of Grand Marais\, on the North Shore of Lake Superior. A Grand Portage tribal descendent\, she\nbegan interviewing Chippewa City elders in 1987 for the book Walking the Old Road: A People’s History of Chippewa City and the Grand Marais Anishinaabe (U of MN Press\, 2019). \nThe book was awarded the Hamlin Garland Prize for Popular History in 2020\, and was the winner of the 2020 NE MN Book Award for non-fiction. It was also selected as a MN Book Award finalist. \nThe presentation is free and family friendly – donations are always appreciated. \nMasks will be mandatory during the indoor presentation.
