SUMMARY:Chel Anderson - Northwoods Orchids: their complex and sometimes mysterious lives
DESCRIPTION:Chel Anderson has lived\, worked\, and strenuously exercised her curiosity in Cook County since 1974. Before retiring to the rest of her life in 2019\, she spent the last 21 years of her career as a lead plant ecologist and botanist with the Minnesota Biological Survey. Chel is coauthor with Adelheid Fischer of North Shore: A Natural History of Minnesota’s Superior Coast published by the University of Minnesota Press in 2015.   \nCook County Minnesota is home to 32 species of orchids. Some are flashy\, well-known “celebrities”\, others are diminutive\, cryptic and unknown to most of us. At home in a wide variety of habitats and plant communities \, orchids live in complex and surprising relationships with other lives there. Chel’s presentation will delve into this captivating family of plants and their fascinating lives. \n  \nThis presentation will be held at the Chik-Wauk Nature Center.\nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public.\nDonations are always appreciated. Take your time driving up the Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway! \nPresentations are sponsored by Visit Cook County and the GTHS Gift Club! \n

SUMMARY:Briand Morrison - Return Concert & Multimedia Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 18\, 2026\n4:00 PM – 6:00 PM\nA. Paul & Carol Schaap Community Center\nFree Concert • $10 per person Donation Appreciated\nAcclaimed guitarist Briand Morrison returns to the Gunflint Trail Historical Society’s Artist-in-Residence Program following his winter residency this past March\, bringing his incredible ability to bridge modern jazz mastery with the rugged\, remote beauty of the Northwoods landscape. \nKnown for his vibrant\, highly visual\, and engaging “composing on the fly\,” Briand creates rich melodic improvisations deeply rooted in his Anishinaabe heritage. Despite being a solo guitarist on stage\, the audience won’t just hear a sparse acoustic set. By utilizing a unique blend of his live playing and modern technology\, Briand builds complex\, layered rhythmic patterns and harmonic backdrops in real-time\, giving this performance the full\, rich weight of a complete jazz ensemble. \nBriand said of his residency experience\, “I was able to practice\, record\, and evaluate my playing and direction… I’m going to take this place with me when I leave… It’s changed my playing.” \nJoin us for this free community event to: \n•  Hear original tracks and learn about the songwriting process\n•  Gain deep insights into the composition of pieces throughout the performance\n•  Enjoy beautiful vocal collaborations with his partner\, Roxann Berglund\n•  View photos from his winter residency and see how the Northwoods inspires his art \nLight snacks and beverages will be available during breaks. \nAdmission is free\, with a suggested donation of $10 per person to support the Gunflint Trail Historical Society’s Artist-in-Residence Program.  \nWhether you’re a musician\, artist\, nature enthusiast\, or simply curious about the creative process\, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience fine art up close and discover how patience\, observation\, and technical skill come together to create compelling works inspired by the natural world. \nCommunity support makes this program possible. His musical style functions much like paint on a canvas\, heavily inspired by the modernist\, abstract landscapes of his late father\, the renowned Ojibwe visual artist George Morrison. Based out of his home studio along Lake Superior’s North Shore\, Briand continues to push artistic boundaries by exploring new sonic textures that ground sophisticated jazz vocabulary in Native American storytelling. \n\n\n\n\n\n \nThis program has been made possible in part by a grant from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council’s Clean Water Legacy Fund\, through an appropriation to the State of Minnesota from the Clean Water\, Land and Legacy Amendment.

SUMMARY:August - Gunflint Trail Historical Society Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please note the time change: Membership meetings will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. – attend in person at the Seagull Community Center (7 Seagull Lake Access Road – GTVFD Hall #3) or online. A Zoom invitation will be sent out to all members by email on Sunday\, August 9. \nThe GTHS Board of Trustees will give a brief update about current events. Jim Wiinanen will present: \nWILDERNESS Canoe Base: 70 Years on Sea Gull Lake \nIn1956 WILDERNESS Canoe Base began on Fishhook Island\, Sea Gull Lake. With no facilities\, living “under canvas” and cooking over an open fire\, the WILDERNESS Canoe Base was launched providing canoe trips for at-risk youth and has been part of the Gunflint Trail community ever since. Founded by Luther Seminary graduates\, WILDERNESS has grown and changed through the decades\, shaped by leadership\, storms\, fires\, and more—while remaining deeply connected to this place. Join Jim Wiinanen—longtime staff member and Grand Marais resident—as he shares stories passed down through the years\, along with glimpses of the island community that has shaped the lives of staff and campers. \nTreats and conversations follow (thank you to the friends who provide the home-baked goodies each month). If you would like to bring a baked treat for the monthly meetings\, please contact Bonnie Schudy at 218-388-9915. \nThe Gunflint Trail Historical Society has three membership meetings available to all GTHS members. Membership meetings are held on the second Monday of June\, July\, and August. \nLook forward to seeing you either in person or by Zoom. \nFor a complete listing of all the special presentations and events that are taking place at the Chik-Wauk Campus\, visit the calendar of events on the website. \nThank you to all GTHS members for your continued support!

SUMMARY:Dark Sky Caravan 2026 - August 14 & 15 on the Gunflint Trail
DESCRIPTION:We are on a journey to celebrate and preserve Northeast Minnesota’s dark sky window to the universe. The Dark Sky Caravan  Each day brings the caravan to a new destination where there will be free programming for all. \nThe Star Party on the Chik-Wauk Campus will begin at 6:30 with a campfire\, S’mores\, and activities. \nBackup plans with activities for dark sky tours will be in place for inclement weather. \nWear long pants/sleeves. It may be summer\, but the temperature can cool down in the evenings\, and you’re not moving around very much while observing. Wear bug spray. It’s a good idea to protect yourself from mosquitoes\, and you’ll enjoy the time more if you’re not having to swat away bugs. But please do not spray bug spray near the telescopes. Apply it beforehand or briefly walk away from the telescopes to spray. \nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public. Donations are always appreciated. \nTake your time driving up the Scenic Gunflint Trail. \n
