DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n**Opening Day for Chik-Wauk Museum & Nature Center**\nChik-Wauk Museum & Nature Center will open for the season on Saturday\, May 23\, 2026. \n**New Exhibit & Displays:**\n– The Museum has a complete new design visit the new Anishinaabe Exhibit \n“Gaa-zagaandagaag-zaaga’igan” is the Ojibwe word for the lake now known as “Saganaga”. Zagaandagaa-Anishinaabeg delves into the history\, culture\, and experiences of the native people of the border lakes region. The exhibit encompasses the museum’s front room space with nine new exhibit areas\, including an interactive map\, the story of Chief Blackstone’s Last Walk animated by Jonathon Thunder\, pre-historic and Fur Trade era artifacts never previously displayed\, and the popular Voyageur pack lift. A cozy corner invites visitors to listen to stories of Trail life passed down through generations. At the heart of the exhibit is a new mural by local artist Sam Zimmerman. \n**Exhibits and Hours:**\n– The Museum\, American Plan Interpretive Cabin\, and the Trapper Shack Exhibit Building will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.\n– The Nature Center will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.\n– The Watercraft Exhibit Building will also be open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.\n– New local crafters to the gift shop\, so be sure to stop by to check out the new exhibits. \n**Visit:**\nWelcome back to Chik-Wauk Museum & Nature Center this season! Mark Ellis will present on his favorite topic\, loons. \nMark Ellis offers a captivating look into the lives of Minnesota’s iconic common loons\, drawing on 15 years of experience photographing these remarkable birds. Through stunning imagery and engaging storytelling\, he follows the loon’s journey across the seasons-from spring ice-out on northern lakes\, through the busy summer breeding months\, and into autumn as they prepare for migration. The presentation highlights intimate moments from the breeding season\, with special focus on loon chicks and the compelling dynamics between parents and their young as they protect\, nurture\, and teach them to survive. Along the way\, Mark weaves in practical photography tips\, making this program especially appealing to nature enthusiasts and photographers alike. \nTreats and conversations follow (thank you to the friends who provide the home-backed goodies each month). DESCRIPTION:Cary J. Griffith is the author of eight books\, four non-fiction\, and four fiction. His non-fiction includes Lost in the Wild\, Opening Goliath\, Gunflint Burning: Fire in the Boundary Waters\, and Gunflint Falling: Blowdown in the Boundary Waters. His fiction includes Wolf Kill\, Cougar Claw\, Killing Monarchs\, and Dead Catch (out June 2024). He is the recipient of a Minnesota Book Award and a Midwest Book Award. \nCary will talk about Gunflint Falling and his newest book\, Grizzly Narrows\, the 6th Sam Rivers mystery and the latest non-fiction book\, The Prism of the Wolf. \nOn July 4\, 1999\, in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW)\, a bizarre confluence of meteorological events resulted in the most damaging blowdown in the region’s history. Gunflint Falling tells the story of this devastating storm from the perspectives of those who were on the ground before\, during\, and after the catastrophic event—from first-time visitors to the north woods to returning paddlers to Forest Service Rangers. \nThis presentation will be held at the Chik-Wauk Nature Center.\n \nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public.\nDonations are always appreciated. DESCRIPTION:Using the Boreal forest’s flora and fauna as inspiration\, Duluth-based printmaker and teacher Kelly Dupre will host a two-hour creative workshop on relief and monoprint making on Wednesday\, June 24\, from 3–5 p.m. at the A. Paul & Carol Schaap Community Center. Kelly is the second of three 2026 Artists-in-Residence. \nHands-on participation is limited to 15 people\, but everyone is welcome to watch\, listen\, and learn more about the printmaking process. Children are welcome when accompanied by an adult. No prior printmaking experience or materials are needed. \nThe workshop is free\, though donations supporting the Artist-in-Residence Program are gratefully accepted. \nAdvance registration is encouraged by June 22. DESCRIPTION:Keith Morris is an artist\, builder\, woodworker\, writer\, master paddler\, and woodsman\, as well as an inventor holding two patents that improve transporting a kayak. \nGenerations of his family have lived on the Gunflint Trail since 1915\, arriving from Iowa to flourish in the North Woods through mastery of outdoors skills\, grit\, and gumption. \nWhether running a tourist business\, hunting\, fishing\, paddling\, skiing\, cutting lake ice\, building log houses\, or flying airplane support in the wilderness\, the Morris family’s Gunflint Trail life is as creative and inspiring as Keith’s spectacular illustrations and engaging essays on trail life as he has lived it\, from 1950s to 2026. His family has operated on Poplar Lake since 1915\, offering early flying services and running Nor’wester Lodge\, which gave Morris a unique upbringing in the remote northern Minnesota wilderness. \nKeith has famously paddled 100 miles in a single day and\, on one occasion\, was tracked by a wolf pack deep in the Boundary Waters. \nThis presentation will be held at the Chik-Wauk Nature Center. \nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public.\nDonations are always appreciated. SUMMARY:Chel Anderson - Northwoods Orchids: their complex and sometimes mysterious lives
DESCRIPTION:Chel Anderson has lived\, worked\, and strenuously exercised her curiosity in Cook County since 1974. Before retiring to the rest of her life in 2019\, she spent the last 21 years of her career as a lead plant ecologist and botanist with the Minnesota Biological Survey. Chel is coauthor with Adelheid Fischer of North Shore: A Natural History of Minnesota’s Superior Coast published by the University of Minnesota Press in 2015.   \nCook County Minnesota is home to 32 species of orchids. Some are flashy\, well-known “celebrities”\, others are diminutive\, cryptic and unknown to most of us. At home in a wide variety of habitats and plant communities \, orchids live in complex and surprising relationships with other lives there. Paul & Carol Schaap Community Center\nFree Concert • $10 per person Donation Appreciated\nAcclaimed guitarist Briand Morrison returns to the Gunflint Trail Historical Society’s Artist-in-Residence Program following his winter residency this past March\, bringing his incredible ability to bridge modern jazz mastery with the rugged\, remote beauty of the Northwoods landscape. \nKnown for his vibrant\, highly visual\, and engaging “composing on the fly\,” Briand creates rich melodic improvisations deeply rooted in his Anishinaabe heritage. Despite being a solo guitarist on stage\, the audience won’t just hear a sparse acoustic set. SUMMARY:Postponed to August Jo Swanson - Many Hands\, One Forest: Caring for the Superior National Forest
DESCRIPTION:Jo Swanson is the Executive Director of the nonprofit Friends of the Superior National Forest (formerly known as Northwoods Volunteer Connection).  \nShe lives in Two Harbors and Askov\, Minnesota\, but has been exploring the Gunflint Trail area for 25 years. She consistently logs over 52 nights of camping per year\, many of which are in the backcountry. She has a background in environmental education and has backpacked over 20 long-distance hiking trails. The Superior National Forest is one of her favorite places.   \nThe Superior National Forest is enormous – and so is the effort to take care of it! Join Friends of the Superior National Forest Executive Director Jo Swanson to learn about the intense group effort to care for over 3 million acres of public land. Jo will give a brief overview of why this work is so critical and how the organization came to be. She’ll share some success stories with lessons learned along the way and give you inspiration for how everyone can be part of stewarding this incredible forest. \nThis presentation will be held at the Chik-Wauk Nature Center. \nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public.\nDonations are always appreciated.
