SUMMARY:David Hakensen - Helen Hoover on Gunflint Lake
DESCRIPTION:David Hakensen is a communications consultant and the immediate past president of the Minnesota Historical Society. He is the author of “Her Place in the Woods: The Life of Helen Hoover.” The biography of one of Minnesota’s most beloved nature writers\, from her career in the city to her rustic cabin on Gunflint Lake \nDavid will discuss his new biography about the life of Helen Hoover. Helen was a best-selling nature writer from the 1960s and 1970s who lived on Gunflint Lake with her artist husband Adrian. David will explore Helen’s career in Chicago before moving to the Gunflint Lake area in 1954 and her success writing books for adults and children. \nHer Place in the Woods captures both an awakening to the power and fragility of the natural world and the efforts and talents of an extraordinary woman defining herself as a writer. Though Helen Hoover would move on from the secluded North Woods\, as she wrote in her final book\, The Years of the Forest\, “From this time on it would be both here and with me wherever I might be\, as long as I should live.” \nDuring the late 1950s through the early 1970s\, Helen Hoover’s stories and essays of life in the wilderness on northern Minnesota’s Gunflint Lake\, published in popular magazines and several bestselling books (including The Gift of the Deer in 1966 and A Place in the Woods in 1969)\, found millions of fans and earned her accolades alongside nature writers like Sigurd Olson\, Rachel Carson\, Sally Carrighar\, and Calvin Rutstrum. Hoover’s unlikely history of leaving a corporate career in Chicago for a small cabin without electricity or running water—with no interest in hunting or fishing—is just one chapter of the remarkable life that David Hakensen describes in Her Place in the Woods. This first complete biography illuminates how Helen Hoover (1910–1984) made a place for herself and for countless readers in\, as she put it\, the world of her time. David’s book will be available to purchase at Chik-Wauk Museum. \nThe Hoovers were woefully unprepared for life off the grid and slowly learned how to convert sheds into chicken coops and fend off bears. \nSocial encounters presented their challenges\, with Helen’s fiery personality leading to clashes with hunters and other Gunflint neighbors. Gradually\, the Hoovers settled into the rhythms of their remote homestead\, and Helen would craft a prolific literary livelihood from her keen observations of nature and encounters with animals in the surrounding woods. \n \nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public. Donations are always appreciated. Take your time driving up the Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway. \n\n        \n\n

SUMMARY:Martin Kubik - Backpacking Trails in the BWCAW and other stories
DESCRIPTION:Martin Kubik\, who guided in the BWCAW out of Gunflint Trail\, was a US Forest Service firefighter and survived capsizing in an open canoe on Lake Superior. A lifelong advocate for hiking trails in the BWCAW\, Martin is a recipient of several outdoor volunteer awards. He is the founder of the Kekekabic Trail Club\, the 3M Outdoor Club\, the BW Advisory Committee\, and the Boundary Waters Heritage Trails. After retiring from 3M Co. as a printing specialist in 2018\, he enjoys sewing custom camping gear\, exploring wilderness paths that are less traveled\, and adventure storytelling. Martin can be reached at martin.kubik@bwheritagetrails.org. \nMost people know the BWCAW as a canoeist’s paradise. But the best-kept secret is that several overnight backpacking trails can be found only on foot. Martin Kubik will share photos\, maps\, stories\, and origins of the Kekekabic\, Powwow\, and Sioux Hustler trails. Hiking on these paths offers unmatched solitude\, immersion in the deep forest\, and potential survival experience for the unprepared. Martin will cover the gear\, food\, and clothing basics for a trip you will enjoy\, not endure.\nTime permitting\, Martin will share about his winter trek in the BWCAW\, a snowshoe day hike in a quest for a forgotten campsite\, a what was supposed to be an easy day trip that ended up being a 20-hour nighttime ordeal\, getting by at night with only a small emergency pen light. \nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public. Donations are always appreciated. Take your time driving up the Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway.\n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Mark Ellis - Loon Photography and Stories
DESCRIPTION:Mark Ellis is a retired research chemical engineer from 3M Company and has nurtured a lifelong creative outlet through nature photography. Beginning at age 12\, and armed with a manual 35 mm camera\, Mark studied the fundamentals of the craft and began photographing the natural world at his family’s northern Minnesota lakeside cabin. Later\, with the arrival of digital photography\, Mark’s ability to capture wildlife and the natural world took on a new dimension. Experiments with time-lapse photography resulted in visual essays depicting swirling stars and auroras moving across the night sky. \nWith a theme of nature conservation and education\, Mark donates to various causes\, including an annual loon calendar at the National Loon Center in Crosslake\, Minnesota. His time-lapse work has been featured by the BBC’s Natural History Unit\, Nat Geo WILD\, science blogs\, and Minnesota Public Television (Almanac). His video clips also appear in “Medicine of the Wolf\,” an award-winning 2015 documentary about wolves\, available on outlets such as Amazon Prime and Hulu. \nMark will summarize his photography background and overview his loon photography technique and loon interaction etiquette. Through photos and accompanying stories\, Mark will illuminate loon life during the breeding season from migratory spring return after ice-out through to fall migratory departure. The dedication of loon parents will be illustrated during nesting through to care\, training\, and protection of loon chicks and maturing juveniles. Primary natural and human conflict hardships in the lives of loons will be illustrated to emphasize the need for loon conservation efforts and expand appreciation for these magnificent birds. \n \nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public. Donations are always appreciated.\nTake your time driving up the Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway.

SUMMARY:Lee Frelich - 400 years of fire and wind in the BWCAW
DESCRIPTION:Lee E. Frelich is the Director of the University of Minnesota Center for Forest Ecology.\n\nHe received a Ph.D. in Forest Ecology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1986. Frelich has authored 234 publications with 360 coauthors from 26 countries\, including major works for Cambridge University Press and Oxford University Press. He is listed among the top 1% of all scientists in the world in the Ecology and Environment category by the Web of Science. His research has been featured in the news media 600 times\, including such venues as The New York Times\, Newsweek\, and Washington Post.\n\nCurrent research interests include large-scale fire and wind\, earthworm invasion\, and climate change in temperate and boreal forests.\n\n\n\n\nThis presentation will include:\nMapping and dating fires show that large\, high-intensity crown fires that regenerate jack pine\, black spruce\, birch\, and aspen forests every 50-100 years have been common in the BWCAW over the last 4 centuries. Parts of the landscape have had smaller\, lower-intensity surface fires every few decades that regenerate white and red pine forests. Variations in fire frequencies due to changing climate\, activities of indigenous people and European settlers\, and in recent decades\, large-scale windstorms\, have had significant impacts on the composition of forests that we see on the landscape today.\n\n\nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public. SUMMARY:Sam Guida - Galls\, Burls and Brooms\, Oh My!
DESCRIPTION:Sam Guida (he/him) is currently working as the Facilities Director at Camp Olson YMCA in Longville\, Minnesota. One day\, when wandering down the driveway\, he noticed a funny bump on a willow tree. After some investigation\, it turned out to be a gall caused by a tiny critter with a huge name: a willow beaked gall midge\, and Sam has been finding lumps on leaves\, funny-shaped flowers\, and spots on twigs ever since. \nHe has also partnered with several organizations to host gall workshops\, including the Minnesota DNR\, the Sax-Zim Bog\, WTIP\, and Wolf Ridge ELC. Sam also enjoys eating things he finds outside\, cross-country skiing\, and power naps on the couch with Rowan the Cat. Galls\, burls\, and brooms! Oh my! \nThis presentation will focus on exploring the lilliputian world of galls\, burls\, witches’ brooms\, and non-metazoan plant diseases\, as well as the plants they grow on. Galls (no relation to sea gulls) are little hidden insect homes inside plants. You’ve seen some before\, such as the ping-pong-ball-sized lumps on goldenrod. \nDuring the presentation and the following outing\, we’ll discover an awe-inspiring world that you’ve overlooked your entire life! \nWe will start with a PowerPoint with some general information before heading out for a hike\, training our eyes to notice lumpy leaves and other plant deformities\, perfecting our identification skills as we go! We will find many new-to-you species and are guaranteed to come across some species unknown to science! We’ll also stop to appreciate all the other cool stuff we find along the way! By the end of the presentation\, you’ll never be able to walk in the woods without seeing a gall\, burl\, broom\, or other non-metazoan (not animal-made) plant disease ever again! \nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public. Donations are always appreciated. Take your time driving up the Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway!

SUMMARY:Open House Celebration - 20th Anniversary of Gunflint Trail Historical Society/ 15th Birthday Chik-Wauk Museum & Nature Center
DESCRIPTION:This postcard came from Nancy Dalbec. On the back it says: “Art & Lydia Nunstedt – \, owners on Saganaga Lake. \nCelebrate 20 Years of the Gunflint Trail Historical Society and 15 Years of Chik-Wauk! \nSaturday\, July 5\, will mark two exciting milestones: the 20th Anniversary of the Gunflint Trail Historical Society (GTHS) and the 15th birthday of the Chik-Wauk Museum & Nature Center! \n🎂 Festivities will include cake and beverages.\n🎤 At 1:00 PM\, longtime resident Sue Kerfoot will share the story of how the GTHS and the Chik-Wauk Museum came to be.\n🥾 Afterwards\, take a guided hike with Emma Adams and learn more about the rich history of the Chik-Wauk property. \nInside the Museum\, don’t miss this year’s special temporary exhibit\, celebrating the incredible spirit and dedication of the volunteers and community members who made Chik-Wauk Museum & Nature Center a reality in 2010. \nFor the cooks and bakers out there\, creating something meaningful often starts with a recipe. But what if there isn’t one? That was the challenge the early GTHS founders faced. There were no instructions—just a vision to preserve the stories of the Gunflint Trail and bring them to life at Chik-Wauk. \nTheir ingredients? Passion\, perseverance\, community spirit\, and a deep love for the Northwoods.\nThis exhibit shares the story of how those ingredients came together to create something truly timeless. \nCome celebrate —honor the past\, enjoy the present\, and help shape the future of this special place.
