SUMMARY:Sammi Shimota - Keep Calm and Mooz On: The Obsticles Moose Must Overcome to Survive in Minnesota (And How We Can Help!)
DESCRIPTION:Sammi Shimota is a passionate early-career wildlife biologist in northern Minnesota and has spent the last 4+ years studying the wolves\, moose\, and deer populations within the 1854 Ceded Territory. \nA once happy and healthy population\, the mooz (moose) of northern Minnesota took a major blow when over half of the population perished between 2006 and 2013. A combination of factors were found to be the cause of this decline- including parasites\, climate change\, and predation. The moose population has remained steady since 2014 but continues to face degraded habitat\, brainworm\, climate change\, and the persistent pressure of predation. Will the moose population ever grow to what it once was? What work is currently being done by researchers to aid the moose\, and what can you do to help them too? \nThis presentation will be held at the Chik-Wauk Nature Center. \nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public.\nDonations are always appreciated. Take your time driving up the Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway! \nPresentations are sponsored by Visit Cook County and the GTHS Gift Club! \n

The exhibit contains nine new exhibit zones including an interactive borders map\, the story of Chief Blackstone’s Last Walk animated by Jonathon Thunder\, illustrations and paintings by Carl Gawboy\, pre-historic and Fur Trade era artifacts never previously displayed\, an area that invites visitors to listen to stories of Trail living passed down through generations of families\, and the popular Voyageur pack lift. At the heart of the exhibit is a beautiful new mural created by local artist Sam Zimmerman and an activity-based Turtle Island sculpture. \nThe public is invited to the celebration on Saturday\, August 22 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Chik-Wauk campus (28 Moose Pond Dr\, Grand Marais\, MN 55604). The event will feature guest speakers\, music by Briand Morrison\, sweet and savory treats\, and refreshments. Members of the design team and muralist Sam Zimmerman will be available to answer questions and share their experience with visitors. \nMark your calendars and join in as Chik-Wauk celebrates the captivating history of the Ojibwe-Anishinaabeg in the border lakes region. The exhibit will be open to the public when Chik-Wauk opens for the season on May 23. \nThe Gunflint Trail Historical Society is grateful to the following foundations who have made a significant investment in the new exhibit Zagaandagaa-Anishinaabeg\, People of the Thick Coniferous Forest. \n\nBlandin Foundation\nLloyd K Johnson Foundation\nArrowhead Arts Council\nIron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB)\nCook County Community Fund – Boreal Waters Community Fund\nNora McNeely Hurley Foundation\nPrivate Donations

SUMMARY:Kyle Johnson - Minnesota Moths
DESCRIPTION:Kyle Johnson has been studying moths for the past 36 years – since age five – from all over Minnesota and Wisconsin to the wilds of Alaska. He is particularly interested in biodiversity inventories\, fauna of different habitats\, and conservation/management concerns. He currently conducts moth surveys for the Minnesota Biological Survey (MN-DNR) and small projects for various conservation organizations outside of Minnesota. \nThe presentation will cover why moths are important\, their diversity in Minnesota\, how to find them\, and conservation concerns. \nThis presentation will be held at the Chik-Wauk Nature Center. \nKyle will offer later in the evening\, dependent on weather a moth field trip.  Return around dusk and stay as late as you’re comfortable. The outing will feature strange lights and fermenting fruit baits.  Be sure to bring a headlamp or flashlight. \nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public.\nDonations are always appreciated. Take your time driving up the Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway! \nPresentations are sponsored by Visit Cook County and the GTHS Gift Club! \n

SUMMARY:Dark Sky Caravan 2026 - August 14 & 15 on the Gunflint Trail
DESCRIPTION:We are on a journey to celebrate and preserve Northeast Minnesota’s dark sky window to the universe. The Dark Sky Caravan  Each day brings the caravan to a new destination where there will be free programming for all. \nThe Star Party on the Chik-Wauk Campus will begin at 6:30 with a campfire\, S’mores\, and activities. \nBackup plans with activities for dark sky tours will be in place for inclement weather. \nWear long pants/sleeves. It may be summer\, but the temperature can cool down in the evenings\, and you’re not moving around very much while observing. Wear bug spray. It’s a good idea to protect yourself from mosquitoes\, and you’ll enjoy the time more if you’re not having to swat away bugs. But please do not spray bug spray near the telescopes. Apply it beforehand or briefly walk away from the telescopes to spray. \nAll presentations are family-friendly and free to the public. Donations are always appreciated. \nTake your time driving up the Scenic Gunflint Trail. \n

SUMMARY:August - Gunflint Trail Historical Society Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please note the time change: Membership meetings will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. – attend in person at the Seagull Community Center (7 Seagull Lake Access Road – GTVFD Hall #3) or online. A Zoom invitation will be sent out to all members by email on Sunday\, August 9. \nThe GTHS Board of Trustees will give a brief update about current events. Jim Wiinanen will present: \nWILDERNESS Canoe Base: 70 Years on Sea Gull Lake \nIn1956 WILDERNESS Canoe Base began on Fishhook Island\, Sea Gull Lake. With no facilities\, living “under canvas” and cooking over an open fire\, the WILDERNESS Canoe Base was launched providing canoe trips for at-risk youth and has been part of the Gunflint Trail community ever since. Founded by Luther Seminary graduates\, WILDERNESS has grown and changed through the decades\, shaped by leadership\, storms\, fires\, and more—while remaining deeply connected to this place. Join Jim Wiinanen—longtime staff member and Grand Marais resident—as he shares stories passed down through the years\, along with glimpses of the island community that has shaped the lives of staff and campers. \nTreats and conversations follow (thank you to the friends who provide the home-baked goodies each month). If you would like to bring a baked treat for the monthly meetings\, please contact Bonnie Schudy at 218-388-9915. \nThe Gunflint Trail Historical Society has three membership meetings available to all GTHS members. Membership meetings are held on the second Monday of June\, July\, and August. \nLook forward to seeing you either in person or by Zoom. \nFor a complete listing of all the special presentations and events that are taking place at the Chik-Wauk Campus\, visit the calendar of events on the website. \nThank you to all GTHS members for your continued support!

Join us at the July membership meeting\, where\, after a brief presentation\, we can share a story or two about the lives of those we lost. If you would like to share the memory of a loved one who has passed this year\, please reach out to info@gunflinthistory.org. \nPlease note the time change: Membership meetings will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. – attend in person at the A. Paul & Carol Schaap Community Center (7401 Gunflint Trail GTVFD Hall #1) or online. A Zoom invitation will be sent out to all members by email on Sunday\, July 12. \nThe August GTHS Membership meeting will be held on August 10\, at the Seagull Lake Community Center. \n
